my retirement

I thought about calling a press conference today, but that seemed a bit overkill.  A simple press release posted on this site should suffice.  In the interest of preventing tons of interview requests from ESPN, CNN and other Media blogs, I am granting full reprint rights of this release.

Today I am announcing my retirement from Fantasy Football.

This decision has been a couple of months in the making.  I was thinking about goals I have for the coming year and how much time it would take to realize them.  Specifically, I’d really like to get down on paper the story of a guy who wins money on a gameshow and adopts an amazing little girl before said little girl gets too old and all of the memories fade to unreliability.

But endeavors such as that take a good clip of time, and time is not something my life has an abundance of right now.  To excel in a new arena requires I give something up, and that “something” is fantasy sports.  There’s even a good chance I might have to give up one or two more “somethings” along the way.

The final decision to hang up my clipboard came this week as I started to get the itch to begin my draft board.  This is the time of year that I start draft prep, so I poked around a couple of websites to get the draft juices flowing.  But this year things just didn’t seem right.  They always say that any time a competitor starts to loose that fire, you should just hang it up.

So this football season will be very different.  I probably won’t know who the third string running back is on each team.  I won’t be tempted to sit down and watch two last-place teams slog out a brutal game announced by the last-choice pair of announcers.  There will be no compulsion to root against the Chiefs so that my fantasy team can rack up a few extra points.  Shoot, as much as the Manny and I enjoy watching soccer, it will likely get more screen time than the NFL does this year.

There will undoubtedly be moments of temptation over the next six weeks.  Lucrative offers to get back in the game.  But I will remain resolute in my stance.

Granted, I always reserve the right to go all Jordan45 on cats come 2010 and beyond.  I’m just sayin’.  Sometimes a dude gets the itch.

my new favorite time of day

I think our house is finally starting to settle into a daily routine.  Thank goodness.  I feel like I’ve been floating through the last two months.  The ever-changing moods of small children and the ever-changing sleep patterns kept me from feeling grounded.  We’re a little more solid these days.  Word.

The best part of the new routine is the first part of the morning.  Stacy is on a rotation that requires her to leave at 6:30am, so she gets up a bit before that to get ready (which doesn’t take all that long since it is a rotation where she can wear scrubs every day) and feed the LilJedi.

Once he’s fat and happy, she brings him for a little visit to mommy and daddy’s bed.  The little guy doesn’t get to hang out there that often because we have been really good about having him sleep in his own bead, lest we end up with a 3 year old someday who insists on sleeping with his parents.  But once he’s put in a whole night’s work, he’s welcome to come kick it.  And kick it he does.

By “it”, I mean “dad”.  That boy is a flailer.  He spends about 15 minutes punching  and kicking me, but I can deal with it.  He flashes me some good smiles and does quite a bit of cooing, so it all balances out in the end.

But while LilJedi is showing greater propensity for enthusiasm, he still lacks in the stamina department.  Thus, after 20 minutes or so the flailing stops.  Yawns take the place of coos and the eyelids get heavy.  And then daddy and son get to practice our synchronized napping routine until sister gets up.

Most def my favorite part of the day.

envy

We Star Wars fans are an arrogant lot.  Confident in our assertion that our Sci-Fi series is the best ever created.  Battle Star Galactica?  Cute, but not even in the same league.  X-Files was a little too creepy for the mainstream.  The only reasonable rival would be Star Trek.  But every other movie was doodoo, and the TV show didn’t even last that long.  And a big mark on the minus side of ledger for too many men in spandex.  Lance Armstrong could pull it off.  Paul Hamm, too.  Not so much with the cast of Trek.

But things done changed.  I went and saw that new Star Trek.  When it comes to new incarnations of old movies, those cats have us Star Wars fans whipped after one movie.  It pains me to have to admit that, but I’ll man up and do it.

The sad thing is, I was pretty content with SW: Ep I up until last month. It was a flawed movie with corny dialogue, but so were the all three films in the classic trillogy.  The one unforgivable sin was JarJar, but I was even willing to overlook him in light of my joy for new movies.

Honestly, Star Trek changes a lot of that.  It makes me realize that George Lucas would probably have been better off casting his vision to a contemporary director, and letting that new air take the series higher.  And he needed to do a better job casting.  Episode I could have been better.

All that being said, the next two films got way better.  And Star Trek has never shown the ability to put together any type of winning streak when it comes to successive strong films, so there’s a chance we can catch them over the next couple of installments.
