(black) friday funkfest 21

I can’t even tell you how many times that video has been played at our house over the past 10 days.  Clearly, I love it.  And so does The Manny.  But the primary requester is none other than Elli.  I couldn’t be more proud.  As a parent, I haven’t done my duty in making sure my kids are familiar with all things Star Wars, but this helps.  A lot.

  • I thought I had some good pranks in college, but mine paled in comparison to the cats who turned the Great Dome at MIT into R2-D2.
  • Back in the day, I used to watch Muppet Babies every Saturday morning.  In their opening sequence, there would be highlights of a Star Wars episode.  And yet, I never had the opportunity to actually see that coveted episode.  Well aren’t we just so glad it’s been preserved by The Smithsonian as a national relic Youtube?
  • Best…DJ…EVAH.  Probably not a fair fight, since he’s a Jedi.
  • An awesome slide show on why KC should be one of the host cities for the 2018 World Cup.
  • Interesting list on the largest soccer venues in the world.  The shocker?  #1 is in North Korea.  150,000 seat capacity.  I mean, dang.  That would be a lot of fannies in the seats.  I’ve always been fascinated by large stadiums.  I really want to see a college football game in a 100,000 seat stadium filled to capacity at some point.  I’m not sure what kind of match in North Korea would draw 150,000 fans, seeing how the country isn’t all that open.  But still, I’m totally going to sneak into the country see a match there when the country opens someday.  I’m also totally working under the assumption that using strikethrough will keep the CIA from monitoring my site.
  • I don’t really mind the taste of envelope glue.  Ok, ok.  I actually like it a little bit.  But bacon flavored envelopes would definitely be an upgrade.
  • Great essay on why the movie Precious is dangerous.  I have yet to see it, mostly because I think the connections to the kids I work with would make the experience too emotional for me right now.  But also because I’m frustrated with movies made about black kids (perhaps a post on this later).  Ironically, there is an ad for The Blind Side adjacent the essay.
  • Did the church play a role in the economic crash? Seems like a reasonable question to ask.

Video Bonus:

I’ve never seen a video fly across the internet hotter and faster than Muppet Bohemian Rhapsody.  Over 4 million hits 4 days on Youtube.  The instant classic to end all instant classics.  But this other video has got to be the second best Bohemian Rhapsody offering on the internet.

Kid Quote of the Week:

Dad, it’s called a “wedgie”.  When your panties are stuck in your bottom, it’s called a “wedgie”

- My 4 yr old daughter.  Now I know what to call it if my panties are ever stuck in my bottom.

Tweet of the Week:

Macy’s Parade, heard new song: “God is great, beer is good, people r crazy.” So…haven’t missed much on country music scene. (@jposnanski)

12 seconds a day

One of the things I love about twitter is the challenge of communicating something in a brief space.  140 characters.  That’s all you have to work with.  Sure, you can still soapbox.  But you had better make it brief.  There is art in the challenge.

Now a new challenge has been integrated. A couple of tweeps (specifically @jeffisageek and @vivid13) have been posting 12 second videos, and it’s been a pretty cool experience.  Bit-sized slices of life, 12 seconds at a time.

So I signed myself up and now I have a new goal: Make one 12 second video each day.  Consider it my initial foray into film making.  You see what I see.  Two days and two videos in, I clearly need to work on keeping a steady camera.  But when you are trying to record video in one take while playing a game or using off limbs to keep a dog out of the frame, there is clearly a high level of difficulty to the task.

I now present the world premiere of my two first 12 Second Films: an UNO game I played yesterday with the kids at work, and Elli showing her usual morning joy.

If you want to follow my series of (really, really, really) short films, I’ll have an RSS set up on the blog.  I’ll also pump them straight to Twitter.

where’s the hope in an “m-rated” life?

kids shouldn’t play violent video games.  studies has shown it produces increased aggressive behavior, thoughts, and affect; increased physiological arousal; and decreased prosocial (helping) behavior.  so video game companies have to slap an “m” on the bottom of such games.  “m” for mature.  because it’s not good for kids.

but what about kids who are in environments where life causes them to see things that are way too “m”?

a couple of weeks ago one of the boys i work with watched his sister’s boyfriend get jumped.  by four dudes who were waiting for this kid to leave his girlfriend’s house.  not just a little bullying, pushing and yelling.  full-on face stomping, boot to the grill.  the kid’s jaw was crushed and he had to have major surgery to fix it.

the next day a different boy walked into our building with an unconventional greeting.

“i saw someone get shot today”

“where?”

“on the corner down the block from my house…he was twitchin’ and stuff”

“did you call the cops?’

“no…someone else did”

dude was pretty unaffected. i think. knowing him and his life, i wouldn’t be shocked if this wasn’t the first time he’d seen this type of violence.plus, i’m not sure they had a working phone in the house, so he gets a bit of a pass.

i consider myself fortunate to not have actually witnessed an act of extreme violence yet. two have happened within two blocks of my office over the past few weeks.  and i did witness a police raid our my office window a couple of weeks ago.  probably had something to do with the dudes who had been hanging out on that block for about a month, and were clearly up to no good.

it’s sad that stuff happens. not even under the cover of darkness, but out in the open and out in the daylight.  it’s even more sad that children are the witnesses. and it’s sad that people outside the neighborhood aren’t all that passionate about seeing it end.

it’s an m-rated existence, and the products can’t be beneficial.
